What is TRiM and how did it originate?

Trauma Incident Management (TRiM)

Trauma Incident Management (TRiM) originated in the UK Armed Forces after The Falklands War between Argentina and the United Kingdom in 1982. After the British victory, the then Prime Minister, Baroness Margaret Thatcher wanted to immediately parade to the United Kingdom, and the press, the victorious British Armed Forces. As such the Parachute Regiment involved in the conflict were immediately flown home by aircraft and paraded as heroes.

In comparison, the Royal Marines involved in the conflict sailed home by ship taking many weeks to return to the UK. They spent this quality time together after a hard-fought war in which many lives were lost. This forced time in isolation together, although not realised at the time, allowed the Royal Marines a better chance of long-term recovery from the traumas that they had seen.

The Royal Marines spent many weeks together sharing and discussing their experiences, both positive and negative, in the safety of their peer group. Traumatic experiences were discussed in detail, bad dreams were seen and heard within the ship’s cabins and as a collective the Royal Marines looked after one other. The majority of these Royal Marines were able to process the traumatic things that they had seen, during the time that had been inadvertantly made available to them. This was not the case for the Parachute Regiment unfortunately who had been thrown back into civilian life within 24-48 hours.

As the years and centuries passed, it became evident that many more of the Parachute Regiment were suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) compared to that of the Royal Marines. The Royal Marines discovered this from an early stage and continued to develop a culture of openness, encouraging members to talk openly after any traumatic or potential traumatic event, devising a system of peer group supervision which later got formally named as TRiM.
